AllOn Impact Story – 5KVA 48V Solar Installation By Auxano Solar

#AllOnImpactStory – All On social solar initiative powers up elderly care facility in Portharcourt

Reverend Sister Mary Jane Raphael Agubosi has been the Matron at the Home for the Elderly under the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt since 2010.

The facility is the recipient of a 5KVA 48V solar Installation, just completed by Auxano Solar Nig. Ltd. This is significant because the facility is a charitable organization without enough resources to pay for the high cost of running its 100KVA diesel generator.

According to Sister Mary Jane Raphael Agubosi, the home was spending approximately N50,000 a month on diesel, in addition to N25,000 on generator maintenance costs. “We are now saving about N80,000 a month,” she said.

Yet the financial benefits are just the tip of the iceberg.

“Solar power has changed the life of the elderly people we care for in the home…We now always have light whether or not there is NEPA and our members are happier at night,” said Sister Mary Jane.

The eldercare facility is also the first project to be completed with funding from the All On Social Solar Initiative which was established in April 2021. Projects are proposed by Shell staff, All On staff and investee community with seed funding, while All On matches contributions for the full cost of executing projects.

Recently, the freezing conditions in Texas crippled the entire state and brought about many deaths. We also, heard about California literally burning because of heatwaves and wild fires.

Do we want these extreme climate changes to befall our country?  I could guess what our response might be.

Extreme climate change is already upon us. Have we not noticed the increased heat or the noticeable absence of rain and the prolong rainy days when it chooses to rain? Are you still comfortable? Alternatively, do you still think is not your palaver?  You can do your part to conserve the planet remember, a tiny drop in a river causes several ripples.

We can help the gentle, lush and glorious mother-earth by rethinking our energy options and substituting them with non-conventional and environment friendly options that will help us. Always bear in mind that nature doesn’t need humans instead human needs nature to thrive in this world.

Solar power works by converting light from the sun into electricity. This electricity can then be used in your home or exported to the grid when it’s not needed. This is done by installing solar panels on your roof which generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. This is then fed into a solar inverter which converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into AC (Alternating Current) electricity.

Your solar panels are made up of silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits your solar panels, the solar PV cells absorb the sunlight’s rays and electricity is produced via the Photovoltaic Effect. The electricity produced by your panels is called Direct Current (DC) electricity, and which is not suitable to be used in your home by your appliances. Instead, the DC electricity is directed to your central inverter (or micro inverter, depending on your system set up). 

Your inverter is able to convert the DC electricity into Alternating Current (AC) electricity, which can be used in your home. From here, the AC electricity is directed to your switchboard. 

A switchboard allows your usable AC electricity to be sent to the appliances in your home. Your switchboard will always ensure that your solar energy will be used first to power your home, only accessing additional energy from the grid when your solar production is not enough. With solar power, you don’t need to switch it on in the morning or switch it off at night – the system will do this seamlessly and automatically. You also don’t need to switch between solar power and the grid, as your solar system can determine when is best to do so based on the amount of energy being consumed in your home.  In fact a solar system requires very little maintenance (as there are no moving parts) which means you’ll hardly know it’s there. This also means a good quality solar power system will last a long time.

Your solar inverter (usually installed in your garage or in an accessible spot), can provide you with information like the amount of electricity being produced at any particular point in time or how much it has generated for the day or in total since it has been operating. Many quality inverters feature wireless connectivity and sophisticated online monitoring.
